Work-life balance is important for everyone. However, it’s especially vital for entrepreneurs who must juggle many different responsibilities. As a result, health and wellness – and your quality of life – is an integral part of an entrepreneur’s life and there are many reasons why they should pursue it.

Why are fitness and exercise important for your success?

Evidence such as a study in Emerald Insight demonstrates that entrepreneurs are at a greater risk of burnout than other professionals. There are many reasons for this, including that you:

  • Are highly passionate about your work

  • Are often socially isolated

  • Have limited safety nets and sounding boards

  • Work with a constant threat of uncertainty

Wellness for entrepreneurs is a subject that should be taken seriously. Entrepreneurial burnout puts your business and your livelihood at risk.

The typical day-to-day of an entrepreneur with a sedentary and stressful life

Entrepreneurs have a lot of responsibilities and full-time jobs. You usually work long hours, often sitting in front of a computer for the whole time. There is usually little time for exercise, meals, or breaks from your desk. This sedentary lifestyle can lead to several physical health issues, including:

  • Poor posture

  • Neck and back pain

  • Headaches

All these problems are made worse by the stress of your work life. You may also find it hard to relax, have difficulty sleeping, and suffer from irritability and mood swings.

The importance of mental wellness for entrepreneurs

A survey by The Alternative Board found that a massive 72% of small business owners feel overwhelmed by their roles and responsibilities. 

As an entrepreneur, you must be able to make decisions quickly and with confidence. While it may not seem like it, mental health is just as important as physical health. 

It’s been shown that entrepreneurs are more likely to neglect their mental wellness because they see it as a weakness or a distraction from work. This is a big mistake. 

It’s no coincidence that entrepreneurs have a higher risk of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts than the general population.

Mind wellness is important for entrepreneurs. It can help you stay on track with your goals, as well as keep your mind sharp. Like most entrepreneurs, we suspect that you are always looking for new ways to grow and improve your business. A sharp mind is essential for this.

Busy and efficient doesn’t necessarily mean you’re active and healthy

Your business is running well. You think it’s because of your input and effort. Maybe it is. But most of the time, you are too busy to take care of your health. You prioritize efficiency overactivity. This leads to a vicious cycle where you are less active, which then makes you less efficient and busier as you try to compensate for it.

The fact that you’re busy and efficient doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re active and healthy. Have you noticed that you are tiring more easily? 

Perhaps you slack in the afternoon, or find it hard to focus on the task you are doing? 

You may have noticed your waistline has expanded a little, and those tops you used to wear fit a little more snugly than they once did.

All the above are signs that you are neglecting your own mental and physical wellness.

Fitness for entrepreneurs: simple remedies to entrepreneur wellness

Entrepreneurs need to put themselves first and take care of themselves by getting up at least once an hour, standing up when on the phone or talking with someone in person, walking around during conference calls or video meetings, taking breaks every hour to stretch, or doing some simple exercises like squats.

However, if yours is a sedentary existence, it’s not enough just to get up from your desk every hour or two and walk around. You’ll need to spend most of your time moving rather than sitting. If your job is mostly sedentary then at least stand during meetings, or take the stairs instead of the elevator.

There’s a new trend of ‘slow living’ that is gaining traction. Slow living is not about slacking off but instead taking the time to do things that take you away from work and help you recharge. This could be anything. Here are a few examples:

  • Gardening and growing vegetables

  • Walking rather than driving

  • Enjoying meals with friends

  • Spending guilt-free time with your kids

  • Making sure you have ‘me time’

  • Getting back to nature

  • Valuing experiences over belongings

Finally, it is vital for you to take time out of your busy schedule and explore different methods of mental wellness. This includes trying meditation and mindfulness exercises that can be done anywhere with no equipment needed, such as walking in nature or taking up yoga. Don’t think of mental wellness as a luxury. 

We should not think of mental wellness as a luxury, but as a necessity for entrepreneurs. 

Stay fit to run and grow your fitness business

Wellness for entrepreneurs is a necessity. Without mental and physical wellness, you may have no business.

Entrepreneur wellness can help you deal with the day-to-day stresses that your work entails and help you make better decisions that align with your goals and values instead of succumbing to the pressures of society.

Of course, much of the above shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. What may surprise you when you focus on how you are working is that you are not practicing what you are preaching to your customers and clients. Why is that?
